According to a report by the CCMSS, the Yucatan Peninsula lost thousands of hectares of jungle between 2019 and 2023. The report, titled "Deforestation Findings in the Yucatan Peninsula from 2019 to 2023", reveals that a total of 285,580 hectares were lost during this period.

The study identifies several factors contributing to this extensive deforestation, with the construction of the Mayan Train being a significant one. Specifically, the construction of Sections 5, 6, and 7 in the states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, and Campeche led to a considerable loss of jungle areas.

The data suggests that the rate of jungle loss in the Yucatan Peninsula was approximately 71,000 hectares per year. This equates to a loss of 193 forest hectares every day from 2019 to 2023.

Among the regions affected, Campeche was the hardest hit by deforestation during this period, followed by Yucatan and Quintana Roo. The experts concluded that the Mayan Train project emerged as a "new driver of deforestation".
