The Mayan Train has cut back service on its Chetumal-Escárcega route to just three days a week due to a lack of passengers. This sudden change has resulted in confusion among its users.
The low passenger numbers on the Chetumal – Escárcega route, which is section 7 of the Mayan Train service, necessitated a reduction in service frequency. The train now only runs on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The operators of the Mayan Train have explained that the decrease in ticket sales forced them to reduce the service frequency. However, they have assured that as ticket sales increase, they will be able to offer more services.
Despite these changes, the Mayan Train's website has not been updated to reflect them, leading to confusion among users when purchasing tickets. Additionally, travelers going from Cancún to destinations such as Calakmul or Escárcega are required to make a stopover in Chetumal. Due to the service reduction in Chetumal, these travelers may need to stay in the city for one to three nights, depending on their departure day. For instance, a passenger traveling from Cancún to Calakmul on a Thursday would need to spend a night in Chetumal before continuing their journey.
Despite the current challenges, the staff of the Mayan Train remain optimistic. They believe that passenger numbers will increase over time, allowing for a return to regular service schedules. They remain committed to providing high-quality service to their passengers.
