President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as AMLO, announced in a recent report that the much-anticipated Mayan Train will officially open this week. He emphasized that the project, which cost 26 billion dollars, was funded entirely from the public budget, not through debt.
Speaking to a crowd at the Constitution Square in Mexico City, AMLO said, "We are a week away from inaugurating the Mayan Train. The entire circuit. It spans 1,554 kilometers, with 690 kilometers of electrified double track."
The President also noted that the Mayan Train project includes the construction of 35 stations across five states and has generated 660,508 jobs. A total of 43 trains, comprising 219 wagons, were purchased for the project.
In addition to the train infrastructure, AMLO mentioned the preservation efforts in 30 archaeological sites of the Mayan culture and the construction of six hotels along the train route.
"I invite you to visit this region of the country whenever you can. It is one of the most beautiful in the world. There is no region in the world with such artistic and cultural wealth as the ancient Mayan nation," AMLO said, encouraging tourism in the area.
