Save the date! The 10th edition of the Libre Cinema Festival is set to take place in Merida in 2024.

About the Festival:
The Libre Cinema Festival was established in 2014 to address the shortage of cultural spaces and film clubs in Merida, Yucatan, dedicated to local and national film exhibitions. Now in its 10th year, the festival is an independent platform that promotes alternative cinema in Yucatan. It aims to provide a space for local and national filmmakers to develop, share, and appreciate contemporary Mexican cinema. The festival's goal is to cultivate an audience for Mexican cinema in the southeast of the country, fostering new filmmakers and contributing to the decentralization and development of the medium in the region. Festival director, Emmanuel Tatto Pérez, emphasizes the importance of a decade of continuous work on a project that "promotes the cinema that resists".

When and Where:
The festival will take place from November 9 to 16, transforming Merida into a hub of contemporary Mexican cinema. This year, the festival will showcase 25 feature films and three short film programs at the “Manuel Barbachano Ponce” Cineteca and the video room of the Olimpo Cultural Center.

Festival Schedule:
The festival will kick off with a screening of “A Story of Love and War” by Santiago Mohar on November 9, and close with “A Fisherman’s Tale” by Edgar Nito on November 16. Notable guests such as actor Francisco Barreiro and Zapoteca director Casandra Casasola will be in attendance, presenting their projects and engaging with the public. The festival program includes a variety of films and short programs to be screened throughout the week.

Awards:
Three awards will be presented during the festival: Best Short Film, Best Production Folder, and the Young Jury's recognition for Best Short. The prizes, which include incentives of up to 30 thousand pesos, aim to encourage emerging talent and establish a platform for independent cinema in southeastern Mexico.

Special Activities:
In celebration of its 10th edition, the festival has initiated a Peninsular Tour in October, bringing short films to communities in Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo. This initiative aims to decentralize Mexican cinema and create spaces for dialogue on significant social and cultural issues.
