Antonio Rodriguez Ozuna, the Vice President of the Group of World Heritage Cities, has highlighted the potential for Merida's Historic Center in Yucatán to be recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Ozuna pointed out the rich Mayan cultural heritage of the area, including the first cathedral built on mainland America, among other elements that make this location deserving of the prestigious distinction. He emphasized that substantial expertise and national government approval are required to achieve this recognition.
Local authorities have also expressed their confidence in Merida's ability to secure this esteemed status. The potential recognition of Merida's Historic Center as a World Heritage Site would not only honor the city's rich history but also contribute to its global recognition and tourism appeal.
