Tania Candiani’s Yucatán Art Workshop for Emerging Talent

The Yucatán government, through the Secretariat of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta), in collaboration with the contemporary art initiative Proyecto Y, will host a five-day workshop led by renowned Mexican artist Tania Candiani. The program, running from April 21 to 25, is designed for emerging artists and art students, offering a multidisciplinary exploration of creative processes.

A Multisensory Creative Experience

Candiani, an artist with over two decades of experience, will guide participants through methodologies integrating territorial exploration, speculative writing, collective embroidery, and sound composition. The workshop aims to foster collaborative creation, culminating in a live collective installation.

The sessions will emphasize experimentation, intuition, and embracing errors as part of the artistic process. Candiani’s approach encourages slow, deliberate creation, challenging conventional timelines and expectations.

Collaborative Partnership with Proyecto Y

The initiative is part of Tesis+Injerto, a series of exhibitions and discussions organized by Proyecto Y to support the professional development of emerging artists. The collective, led by philanthropist Catherine Petitgas, artist Fritzia Irízar, and curator Oscar García Castro, focuses on nurturing Yucatán’s artistic talent through education, production, and exhibition opportunities.

Workshops will begin on April 21 at the Casa de la Cultura del Mayab, followed by sessions at the Centro Cultural para la Niñez Yucateca in Mérida’s La Mejorada neighborhood. Participation is free for Yucatán-based artists.

Candiani’s Distinguished Career

Candiani’s work spans sculpture, performance, installation, video, and sound art. A former editor for Viceversa magazine in Tijuana, she transitioned to visual arts in the early 2000s, earning recognition through solo and group exhibitions in Mexico, the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. She is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from Mexico’s National System of Art Creators and the Smithsonian Institute.

Her visit coincides with the Tesis+Injerto exhibition at Sedeculta’s Visual Arts Center, open to the public until June 4.
