The Mexican Caribbean is set to end the year with a significant boost in air connectivity. Airports such as Tulum are experiencing growth rates twice as high as initially projected. As we approach the winter season, flights from around the globe are already scheduled, with the Cancun terminal aiming to sustain its over 700 daily operations.
Tulum International Airport has reported that its growth has been double the initial forecast in its first few months of operation since last December. This rapid expansion is unparalleled among other terminals in the country. The next scheduled flight is from Copa in July.
Winter travel plans include connectivity from Calgary and Toronto via West Jet, starting November 9th. Although this will be a seasonal service, it is expected to continue until April 2025. Additionally, European Discovery from Frankfurt will also be landing in Tulum. Toronto will have three flights a week starting from the same date, with additional flights from American airlines, such as Jet Blue's direct flight from New York. This has increased Tulum's connectivity to 19 destinations – four domestic and 15 international – across 12 airlines. By December, the terminal is projected to double its air connectivity. Currently, the terminal operates an average of 222 operations per week.
Cancun is also set to see an increase in connectivity. Neos airline recently announced that it will start flights from Italy to Cancun this December. This includes a Sunday flight connecting cities like Verona, and established routes like Milan and Rome. This will help revive one of the previously lucrative markets for the Mexican Caribbean. Currently, the Cancun terminal averages 3,490 operations per week, with a similar breakdown in Tulum, where 30 to 35% of flights are domestic and the remainder international.
In total, the Mexican Caribbean handles an average of 3,900 operations per week. However, during the high season, this figure is expected to exceed 4,400 operations, connecting to 109 cities worldwide.
