The Mexican Caribbean is in full preparation mode for the upcoming carnival season. The state's Ministry of Tourism (Sedetur) reports that these carnivals bring significant economic benefits, boosting sectors such as hospitality, transportation, food, and local trade. They attract thousands of visitors from both within the country and abroad. The celebrations are scheduled to take place from February 26th to March 5th.

The Downtown Island Lodging Association is already preparing for the influx of tourists during this typically low season. It's noted that during the carnival, tourists usually stay for an average of five days, leading to full occupancy in their accommodation centers. Many of these visitors are repeat attendees who enjoy the carnival atmosphere. Typical spending includes accommodation, meals, transportation, souvenirs, and recreational activities. Authorities estimate that a carnival visitor may spend between eight thousand and 15 thousand pesos per stay.

Carnivals in Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Chetumal, and Playa del Carmen are particularly popular in the state. They not only showcase the rich culture of Quintana Roo but also serve as tourist attractions that stimulate the economy and reinforce local traditions. This year's Cancun Carnival has allocated one million three hundred and forty-five thousand pesos in prizes for various competitions and categories.

Atenea Gómez Ricalde, the mayor of Isla Mujeres, reported that in 2023, the island's carnival generated an economic impact of over four million dollars, with hotel occupancy reaching 94 percent. In the same year, Chetumal's carnival exceeded expectations, with municipal revenue reaching 300 thousand pesos from various sources. Business owners in Playa del Carmen estimate that events like these can boost hotel occupancy rates to between 85 and 90%.
