Mexican Drag Queen Gala Varo Battles Taxi Scams in Quintana Roo

Gala Varo, a prominent Mexican drag queen, recently experienced attempted scams by taxi drivers in Cancun and Tulum. Varo, who has appeared on shows like La Más Draga and RuPaul’s Drag Race, took to social media to share her troubling experiences during her visit to the region.

Varo recounted her attempt to travel from Cancun to Tulum at night. With no ADO buses available, she decided to take a taxi. However, the taxi driver quoted an outrageous fare of 3,000 pesos for the journey, significantly higher than the usual rate.

In search of a more affordable option, Varo turned to the InDrive app. To avoid conflict with traditional taxi drivers, she moved away from the airport before requesting a ride through the app. Despite her efforts, another taxi driver tried to prevent her from using the service, leading to a tense confrontation that was only resolved with the help of a fan and members of the National Guard.

Varo's troubles didn't end there. On her return to Cancun, she used InDrive again to book a taxi. However, the driver who arrived claimed to be from the app service and attempted to charge her 2,500 pesos, more than double the 1,200 pesos quoted on the app. After a dispute, the driver claimed the price had increased because he was sent by the original app driver. Fortunately, an alert from the actual InDrive driver helped Varo identify the scam, and she was able to leave the taxi at a nearby store.

Varo expressed her outrage over the incidents in a video she shared on social media, publicly denouncing the situation. The video has sparked conversations on digital platforms about the abusive practices of some taxi drivers in the region, and has led to a wave of support from her followers and locals who condemn such corruption.
