The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Quintana Roo is working to promote the importance of organ and tissue donation. The hospital coordinator for Donation at Hospital number 17 in Cancun, Dr. Moisés Campos Navarro, emphasized the need for ongoing public education on the subject.
The National Day of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation, which took place on September 26th, underscored the importance of individuals choosing to become donors during their lifetime. So far, 20 families in Quintana Roo have opted to donate the organs and tissues of their deceased relatives, with some making multi-organ donations.
Despite a significant number of people still declining to donate, IMSS remains hopeful that through continued awareness campaigns, the number of donors will rise. The region is witnessing a shift in attitudes towards donation, with discussions on the subject becoming increasingly commonplace, indicating a positive change in public perception.
Events such as tributes to donor families are hoped to reinforce the importance of donation and encourage more people to commit to saving lives through organ donation. In 2023, there were 28 donations made in Quintana Roo, and the hope is to surpass this number in the remaining months of the year.
IMSS is dedicated to cultivating a culture of organ and tissue donation. By sensitizing the public to the issue, the Institute aims to encourage more people to choose to donate, thereby helping to save lives and enhance the quality of life for those in need.
