Jerónimo Abogado and Flavio Montoya, both hailing from Quintana Roo, Mexico, have emerged as champion and runner-up respectively at the Second South American Youth Windsurfing Championship in Paracas, Peru. Both athletes are members of the Puerto Aventuras Sailing Club and their wins contributed to two of the three trophies that the Mexican national team secured at the international championship.
Abogado, a native of Solidaridad, clinched first place in the IQ Foil category, earning the title of 2024 South American Champion at the tender age of 17. Montoya from Cancún secured second place in the Sunfish class, making a notable impression in his first international competition.
Miguel Angel Pani Can, President of the National Windsurfing Association, praised the young Quintanarroenses for their stellar performances and domination throughout the competition. He also commended the coaches for their unwavering support of the Mexican team, which is returning home with three trophies.
Pani Can expressed his pride in the boys’ achievements, stating, “They have represented the National Team and the Puerto Aventuras Sailing Club brilliantly in the Pacific waters.” He singled out Abogado as a promising Olympic prospect for the upcoming 2025 cycle, noting that despite his youth, he is a well-rounded athlete who consistently delivers impressive results for Mexico. Abogado’s success, Pani Can added, is due in no small part to his coach, state sports award winner Toni Ramos Trujillo.
Pani Can also lauded Montoya’s performance, stating, “His results, also from the Puerto Aventuras Sailing Club, were wonderfully supported by his coach Camilo.” He emphasized the importance of tracking the progress of these young athletes, who he believes are the backbone of the Quintanarroense team and future Olympic hopefuls.
Returning from the international competition, Abogado, the current South American champion and future Olympian, won the Varonil Senior IQFoil regatta in Puerto Aventuras. Guillermo Schoning and Mateo Cortes, both from the same club, joined him in securing the top three spots.
In the Leyenda class, Aldo Ancona and Alicia Palacios clinched first place in the Winsurf Overall for males and females respectively. Sarita Ambriz Rojas took first place in the women’s category.
The event, which saw more than 80 sailors participate, concluded with an award ceremony after two days of intense competition. It achieved its goal of promoting the sport across all classes and categories as part of the 2024-2025 regatta circuit.
