Mexico is ramping up its border security with Belize to prevent illegal immigration and drug smuggling. The federal authorities have announced that 10,000 National Guard members will be deployed to the northern regions of Mexico. The border will be patrolled by staff from the Ministry of Citizen Security (SSC), the National Guard (GN), and the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena).
The Mexican Navy (Semar) has clarified that the main concern is not irregular immigration between Quintana Roo and Belize. Instead, the focus is on the smuggling of contraband, drugs, and firearms. Therefore, operations will be carried out along the Hondo River, including its basin. The Mexican authorities have stated that they are working closely with the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) and the Navy to patrol the border with Belize. They are also maintaining joint operations with Belizean authorities.
The authorities have also highlighted that they will increase their presence in the Northern Zone, specifically in the municipalities of Isla Mujeres, Benito Juarez, Tulum, Cozumel, and Solidaridad. These areas are known for attempts by foreigners to enter the country using counterfeit documents. Additionally, the northern coasts will be closely monitored due to the increasing number of boats from Cuba carrying migrants aiming to reach the State.
