Mexico City Grand Prix 2024: The Decisive Showdown in the F1 Title Race

The 2024 Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix promises to be a pivotal event in this year’s intense championship battle. With the competition so tight, what unfolds at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez from the very first practice session could have a decisive impact on both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships.

Mexico has a rich history with Formula 1, having crowned champions five times before (1964, 1967, 1968, 2017, and 2018). It’s no surprise that a victory here could give one driver a significant advantage in the race for the world title.

Key Points Ahead of the Mexico GP

Teams and Drivers:
This year’s F1 World Championship features 10 teams with two drivers each. So far, four teams have managed to claim at least one victory this season: McLaren, Red Bull Racing, Mercedes, and Ferrari. Drivers who have stood atop the podium include Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing), Lando Norris (McLaren), Oscar Piastri (McLaren), Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), George Russell (Mercedes), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari).

Home Hero:
All eyes will be on Sergio “Checo” Pérez, who will be competing in his ninth Mexican Grand Prix driving the #11 Red Bull Racing RB20. Checo has already made history as the only Mexican to stand on the F1 podium at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, with third-place finishes in 2021 and 2022.

Two Mexicans on Track:
In addition to Checo, Mexico will have another driver in action this weekend. Patricio O’Ward, from Monterrey, will participate in Free Practice 1 on Friday, October 25, for McLaren. This marks the first time we’ll see two Mexican drivers competing during an official F1 session at the Mexico GP.

Race Weekend Format

Practice and Qualifying:
Each F1 Grand Prix weekend features three practice sessions, one qualifying session, and the main race. The first two practice sessions will take place on Friday, October 25, giving teams the chance to fine-tune their cars. Saturday is dedicated to qualifying, where drivers push for the fastest lap time to determine the starting grid for Sunday’s race. The fastest driver will secure pole position.

Race Day:
The 25th edition of the Mexico City Grand Prix kicks off on Sunday, October 27, with 71 laps around the 4.304-kilometer Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The first driver to complete the 305.3 kilometers will take home the win.
