Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has officially opened the National Mexico-European Union Forum, aimed at turning the issue of sargasso seaweed into a beneficial opportunity. The forum was attended by Gautier Mignot, the ambassador of the European Union delegation in Mexico, along with representatives from various international financial institutions, government officials, and civil organizations.
In her opening remarks, Governor Lezama acknowledged the economic and environmental impact of the sargasso phenomenon on Quintana Roo, affecting various sectors including tourism and marine activities. She emphasized the need for a collective effort to address this issue, stating that no single entity can tackle it alone.
Lezama recalled her previous initiative, "Everyone against Sargasso," launched during her tenure as the municipal president of Benito JuĂĄrez. This campaign encouraged collective beach cleaning efforts from early morning. While acknowledging the progress made through strategic projects, she stressed that there is still much work to be done as sargasso continues to arrive. She expressed her commitment to transforming this challenge into an opportunity.
The governor reiterated her unwavering support and dedication to addressing the sargasso issue and preserving nature and ecosystems. "We must find a solution. Our coasts, tourist destinations, and the world deserve it. It is clear that nature is trying to communicate with us. We must take care of our environment and seas," she said.
Gautier Mignot, the EU ambassador, expressed his satisfaction with the forum being his final mission in Mexico. He commended everyone involved in addressing the sargasso issue and assured continued collaboration to turn it into an opportunity.
The forum brought together representatives from various international and local entities, government officials, and civil organizations, showcasing a united front in finding innovative and sustainable solutions to the sargasso challenge in Quintana Roo.
