In 2019, the Foundation for Environmental Education in Mexico (FEE Mexico) approved the applications of several new beaches and marinas for the International Blue Flag certification. Of these, 46 beaches and two marinas were up for renewal, while eight beaches and one marina applied for the first time.
HOW MANY BLUE FLAG BEACHES ARE THERE IN MEXICO?
By 2024, Mexico boasts a total of 78 beaches and three marinas holding this prestigious certification. This makes it the leading country in the continent, a record achieved by meeting the established criteria for quality, safety, education, and environmental information. This certification validates the cleanliness and environmentally responsible management of these beaches. Quintana Roo leads the way with 32 beaches and a marina holding this certification. Baja California Sur follows with 25 beaches. Other states like Guerrero, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Jalisco, Nayarit, Yucatán, and Oaxaca also feature on this list with their stunning destinations.
Starting July 1, the certified beaches and marinas began operating, with the certification valid until 2025. The Blue Flag program, established in 2013, recognizes beaches and marinas that have achieved excellence in environmental management. This includes safety and services, as well as the implementation of educational activities and water quality.
LIST OF MEXICAN BEACHES WITH BLUE FLAG CERTIFICATION:
Quintana Roo features beaches such as Albatros Beach, Atelier Playa Mujeres, Playa Centro and Playa Norte, among others. Los Cabos boasts Acapulquito, El Chileno, El Corsario, El Surgidero, and more. Guerrero is home to El Palmar I, El Palmar II, El Palmar III, La Madera, La Ropa I, La Ropa II. Nayarit houses Laguna Santa María del Oro, Lo de Marcos, and Nuevo Nayarit. Oaxaca includes Chahué and Tangolunda Dreams.
The 24 Quintana Roo beaches that received the certification for the first time include Atelier Playa Mujeres and Playa Centro in Isla Mujeres municipality; Ballenas, Chacmool, Coral, Delfines, Hotel Flamingo, Las Perlas, Marlín and Playa del niño in Benito municipality.
