Mexico’s LGBTQ+ Community Endures Shocking Discrimination: Stats

Individuals who identify as non-heteronormative in terms of sexual and gender diversity face the highest rates of discrimination in Mexico. According to the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (Conapred), 37% of this community have experienced exclusion at some point in their lives.

The National Survey on Discrimination (Enadis) further reveals the extent of this bias. It found that 33.4% of the general population would be unwilling to rent a room in their home to transgender individuals. Furthermore, 29.8% would refuse to rent to anyone who does not identify as heterosexual.

These statistics are particularly relevant in light of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. This day has been recognized annually on May 17th since 2004, under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). In response to these findings, Mexico's Ministry of the Interior has called for the rejection of "misguided and unfounded ideas against those with a sexual orientation different from heterosexual".

The Ministry warns that prejudiced practices based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression still persist in the country. Conapred, in a public statement, pointed out that Article 4 of the Political Constitution prohibits any discriminatory practices that prevent or nullify the recognition or exercise of rights and real equality of opportunities. This is also supported by Article 1, second paragraph, fraction III of the Federal Law to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination.

The public is urged to understand the harmful effects of discrimination and stigmatization, particularly towards individuals of diverse sex and gender identities. These behaviors of exclusion cause significant harm to those targeted.
