The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) has successfully rescued two migratory birds that had flown into windows on the island. The birds, a merlin falcon and an American green heron, were cared for by specialists before being returned to their natural environment. This was made possible due to reports from local residents committed to the preservation of the island's wildlife.

Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the general director of the FPMC, emphasized the vital role of community involvement in these conservation efforts. This is particularly important as part of the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, an initiative that encourages locals to participate in environmental protection and promotes Cozumel as the "City of Birds".

Rafael Chacón Díaz, the director of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), detailed that the merlin falcon had flown into a building in the northern hotel zone, while the green heron had collided with a residence in the city center. In both instances, local residents alerted the Center for Conservation and Environmental Education (CCEA), enabling the team to quickly evaluate the birds' condition and arrange for their release.

Birds colliding with windows is a common issue, as they often mistake reflections of the sky or vegetation in the glass for their natural surroundings. Interior building lights can also attract them, leading them to believe they are flying towards open spaces. To help prevent these accidents, Chacón Díaz suggested practical solutions like applying films with visible patterns to windows or installing curtains to make obstacles more noticeable.

This rescue operation serves as a reminder of the crucial role community involvement plays in preserving biodiversity. The FPMC encourages locals to continue learning about and supporting the protection of birdlife in Cozumel, ensuring that the "City of Birds" remains a safe haven for a variety of migratory and local species.
