A Canadian man who went missing in the Mayan jungle has been found. The 47-year-old was reported missing when he failed to return home on Saturday and was located on Monday.

The man, Steve Poirier, had left his home in the community of Ignacio Zaragoza on Saturday. When he didn't return, a missing person report was filed with local authorities on Sunday. A specialized search team was then dispatched to his last known location in the dense Mayan jungle in the central area of the state of Lázaro Cárdenas.

Roberto Bravo Peña, the General Security Director, stated that a search team was assembled. This team included staff from the municipal and state police, Civil Protection, and firefighters from Lázaro Cárdenas. The team initiated the Missing Persons Search Protocol on Monday. Starting early in the morning, they were able to locate Poirier later in the day.

Poirier was found nearly 60 kilometres (37 miles) from his starting point. The search team discovered him at around 2:15 p.m. in a remote part of the jungle. He was roughly five kilometres deep into the dense jungle, on the western end of Playa del Carmen city, almost 60 kilometres (37 miles) from where he had started.

The police report indicated that Poirier was disoriented, dehydrated, hungry, and physically exhausted when he was found. He was immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment before being reunited with his family.
