Santa Clara, Yucatán — Authorities have recovered the body of a diver who went missing following a shipwreck off the coast of Santa Clara, Yucatán. The victim, identified as 38-year-old Luis Alberto Méndez, was reported missing after the boat he was aboard capsized during a diving excursion.
Search Ends in Tragedy
The incident occurred approximately three nautical miles from Santa Clara’s shoreline when strong currents and adverse weather conditions caused the vessel to overturn. Méndez, an experienced diver, was separated from the group during the emergency.
The Mexican Navy, alongside local maritime rescue teams, launched an extensive search operation spanning over 48 hours. Méndez’s body was eventually discovered near the wreckage by a team of volunteer divers.
Official Statements and Investigation
Yucatán’s Civil Protection Directorate confirmed the fatality in a press release, stating that Méndez’s remains showed no signs of external trauma. "Preliminary findings suggest drowning as the cause of death," the statement read.
The boat’s captain, whose name has not been disclosed, survived the incident and is cooperating with investigators. Authorities are examining whether safety protocols were followed, including the use of life jackets and weather advisories.
Community Mourns the Loss
Méndez, a resident of Mérida, was a well-known figure in Yucatán’s diving community. Friends and colleagues described him as a skilled professional with a passion for marine conservation.
"This is a devastating loss for all of us who shared his love for the ocean," said Roberto Sánchez, a fellow diver and close friend. "We urge authorities to ensure such accidents are prevented in the future."
The incident has reignited discussions about safety regulations for recreational diving operations in the region. Local officials have pledged to review maritime guidelines to prevent similar tragedies.
Méndez’s family has been notified, and funeral arrangements are underway.
