The MS Balmoral cruise ship, the flagship of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, has returned to Cozumel after an eight-year absence. The ship docked at the Punta Langosta international pier, reinforcing Cozumel's status as a top cruise port in Mexico and a leading Caribbean destination.
Cozumel offers a wide array of attractions, from natural beauty and diving opportunities to a rich culinary scene and sports activities. The island's traditions and customs are promoted by the municipal government, in collaboration with the private and labor sectors.
The Balmoral offers various cruises around Europe, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, and other destinations. It arrived in Cozumel early Thursday morning, following its departure from Southampton, England on February 15. The ship made stops at three ports in Spain and another three in the Caribbean Sea, starting its journey on March 2. The itinerary includes four more Caribbean destinations before the ship returns to Europe, stopping in Portugal before docking back in Southampton.
Constructed in 1988 and modernized several times, with the most recent refurbishment in 2024, the Balmoral previously sailed for the Royal Cruise Line, Orient Lines, and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). The ship offers seven to 14-day itineraries around Northern Europe, the Canary Islands, and the Mediterranean. It can accommodate 1,476 passengers and a thousand crew members.
Weighing 43,537 tons and measuring 218 meters in length and 28 meters in width, the Balmoral features restaurants, bars, lounges, swimming pools, Jacuzzis, a gym and spa, catering to affluent tourists.
Cozumel's success as a tourist destination contributes to the sustained growth of the tourism sector in Quintana Roo. Governor Mara Lezama is driving a new era in tourism, ensuring that prosperity is shared among tourism industry workers. Under her leadership, tourism not only bolsters the state's economy, but also improves the quality of life for those involved in the industry.
