Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A chain-reaction collision involving at least five vehicles on the Maya Avenue bridge caused significant traffic disruptions in the heart of Playa del Carmen on Tuesday. The accident, which occurred during peak hours, forced authorities to temporarily close the busy thoroughfare while emergency crews cleared the wreckage.
Chaotic Scene as Vehicles Pile Up
Witnesses reported that the crash began when a speeding driver lost control while attempting to merge onto the bridge, striking another vehicle and triggering a domino effect. The impact sent debris scattering across multiple lanes, with at least one car sustaining heavy front-end damage.
Municipal Police and Civil Protection personnel responded swiftly to secure the area, diverting traffic through alternate routes. No serious injuries were reported, though paramedics evaluated several individuals for minor complaints.
Authorities Urge Caution Amid Congestion
Local transit officials confirmed that tow trucks worked for over an hour to remove the disabled vehicles, with normal traffic flow resuming by late afternoon. The incident exacerbated existing congestion along the Maya Avenue corridor, a key artery connecting central Playa del Carmen to Highway 307.
"Drivers must respect speed limits, especially on elevated sections where visibility changes abruptly," cautioned a municipal traffic coordinator at the scene. "This was entirely preventable."
Motorists are advised to monitor real-time updates via the Solidaridad Transit Department’s social media channels as investigators determine fault. The bridge has seen multiple collisions this year, prompting calls for improved signage and enforcement.
