The city council has initiated the formal process to change the name of the Solidaridad municipality to Playa del Carmen. The project involves a range of activities, including public forums, citizen consultations, and discussion sessions. These are all aimed at finding a lawful and orderly way to implement the name change.

Luis Herrera Quiam, the general secretary of the council, announced this development. He explained that the initial planning meeting to outline the necessary activities has already taken place. "We've begun to design a timeline of activities, including consultations and discussion sessions. This will allow us to gather opinions from different sectors of the municipality and determine the most suitable legal path, taking into account the political and economic conditions," he said.

Quiam emphasized that the decision to change the name ultimately rests with the citizens. The public consultations are intended to hear the voices of Solidaridad's residents and ensure that any actions taken reflect the community's collective will.

The proposed name change is intended to strengthen the identity of Playa del Carmen. This city is one of the most iconic in the Mexican Caribbean and serves as the municipality's primary economic driver. However, the authorities stress the importance of conducting this process in an inclusive way, based on well-defined legal and social criteria.

This announcement opens up a significant debate for the residents of Solidaridad. They now have the opportunity to actively participate in deciding the future name of their municipality.
