The Potable Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA) of Cozumel recently uncovered almost 40 unauthorized water connections in several neighborhoods on the island. The majority of these illegal connections were found in newly developed areas, including the Félix González 1 and 2, and Maravilla neighborhoods. These connections were established without any formal contract or legal permission.
Manuel Gurigutia Barrientos, the head of CAPA in Cozumel, reported that these unlawful connections were discovered during routine inspections in the mentioned neighborhoods. “We've identified the illegal hook-ups, and our next step is to reach out to the property owners to encourage them to regularize the service,” said Gurigutia.
He emphasized that this initiative is part of a larger effort to rectify identified irregularities. Despite the competent installation, Gurigutia pointed out that the work was not performed by CAPA staff, but by external technicians operating unlawfully on the island.
As per Gurigutia, these individuals have been illicitly tapping into the supply network, which is viewed as a severe violation and equates to water theft. If any irregularities or damages are discovered, CAPA will enforce strict penalties and demand necessary repairs.
In conclusion, Gurigutia Barrientos stated that while the number of irregular connections is relatively small compared to the over 21,000 users on the island, it's vital to regularize these situations. This is to ensure adequate service and prevent financial losses for the institution.
