Quintana Roo, a popular tourist hub in the Mexican Caribbean, is known for its exceptional air connectivity. This connectivity is continually being enhanced, making travel to this region more accessible and varied for visitors.
Quintana Roo is home to four airports, located in Chetumal, Tulum, Cancun, and the island of Cozumel. These airports provide a range of options for tourists, whether they're visiting specific areas or exploring the 12 destinations available by rail, air, sea, or land transportation. This connectivity is a key factor in providing a comprehensive travel experience for visitors.
In addition to traditional routes connecting Cancun, Chetumal, and Cozumel's international airports, the opening of Tulum airport and new routes to existing airports have prompted many airlines to increase their connectivity with Quintana Roo.
From Europe, Lufthansa – Discover Airlines will introduce a flight from Frankfurt to Tulum, starting from December 2024. Copa Airlines will also commence direct flights to Tulum from its hub in Panama in June 2024.
American Airlines was the first to launch a flight from Dallas to Tulum, and now other U.S. airlines such as Jet Blue, United Airlines, and Delta have followed suit, offering multiple connections. Canada has also introduced flights to Tulum through Air Canada, connecting Toronto and Montreal.
Domestically, airlines like Aeromexico, Mexicana de Aviacion, Volaris, and Viva Aerobus have increased their frequency to this popular destination. A new route from McAllen to Cancun will begin operations in July, with two weekly frequencies. Viva Aerobus is also introducing a direct flight from Monterrey to Cozumel.
Furthermore, the airline Aerus began operations in May, connecting Cancun with Cozumel and Chetumal, further boosting the state's connectivity.
Between June 8 and 14, 2024, Quintana Roo's four airports recorded a total of 3,959 air operations. Cancun accounted for 3,511, Tulum 224, Cozumel 166, and Chetumal 58.
As of May 2024, Mexico has 24 destinations connecting with Quintana Roo's airports. From the U.S., there are 35 cities, 18 cities from Canada, 15 from Europe, and 16 from Central, Caribbean, and South America. A total of 49 national and international airlines operate these routes.
These developments offer more and improved air travel options for both Mexican and international visitors, who continue to favor the Mexican Caribbean and its 12 destinations for their travels.
