Quintana Roo will soon benefit from an additional cancer hospital, as announced by the state's delegate of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Javier Michael Naranjo García. The hospital, located in Cancún, will provide approximately 80 beds dedicated to cancer care.

Naranjo García stated that the hospital will initially prioritize pediatric patients. However, plans are in place to expand services to adult patients in the future. A five-hectare site has been proposed for the hospital and an adjacent research center. The total cost for the project is still under review, with a final budget expected to be confirmed in December.

The choice to build the hospital in Cancún was influenced by the city's excellent transport links, making it more accessible for patients from the northern region. Currently, the only specialized cancer center is in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco. Over the past six years, IMSS has increased its State Reference Centers for the Care of Children with Cancer (OncoCREAN) from 3 to 35. The organization has also recruited an additional 256 doctors and provided 563 more registered beds for cancer care.
