In two weeks' time, the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal is set to reveal plans for a new cathedral in Cancún. Father Mario González, Rector of the Cathedral and spokesperson for the Diocese, has indicated that this project is part of a series of initiatives they have been developing. Although he did not specify whether the project involves new construction or an extension, he assured that more details will be shared soon in partnership with state and municipal authorities.
The proposed cathedral in Cancún is expected to function not only as a religious sanctuary, but also as a community center that offers social aid and contributes to the social cohesion of the municipality. The project has been in the works for 25 years, with the aim of providing Cancún with a cathedral that serves as a unifying and communal space.
The construction process for the cathedral is expected to be gradual, benefiting not just the community of Cancún, but the entire state. The project will be officially presented on November 26th, providing further information on its design and features. The bishop of the Diocese believes in the significance of this project, which is expected to extend beyond spiritual matters to become a hub of assistance and unity for the local community.
