The Maya Train recently set a record with over 3,000 passengers in one weekend. From December 16, 2023 to July 23, 2024, the train has transported 276,825 passengers across various sections. The most popular route is Section 3, from Calkiní, Campeche, to Izamal, Yucatan, which has transported 73,143 people, including 3,575 children and 69,568 adults. Tickets are purchased both at station ticket offices and online, with a total of 55,174 and 17,969 sales respectively.
Section 3 covers 160 kilometers of railway track across 15 municipalities in Campeche and Yucatan, with six stations along the route. From Merida, the route includes a 60-kilometer double electrified track section.
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is constructing 690 kilometers of electrified track in the Yucatan peninsula for the Maya Train, an area larger than the Netherlands, Denmark and Switzerland combined. The CFE is also involved in the creation of the Nachi Cocom Photovoltaic Power Plant in Yucatan, which will supply energy to the electric buses of the public transport system Ie-Tram, and to 53 major works, 11 transmission lines and 42 substations that power the Maya Train.
Finally, there are plans for a multimodal terminal in Progreso and a railway bypass connecting the railway operations center in Poxilá to Progreso starting in 2025. This will include fuel loading points at the storage and dispatch terminal in Progreso.
