Mayor unveils Down Syndrome Photo Stop Plaque in La Gloria

A large group of people of various ages gathered for a community photo on a colorful street stairway, wearing coordinated shirts and smiling at the camera.

In recognition of International Down Syndrome Day, Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde led the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the new Down Syndrome Photo Stop. The plaque is located on the vibrant, colorful stairs of La Gloria neighborhood, a symbol of inclusivity and joy.

The Colored Stairs are a popular tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors annually. The Mayor emphasized their significance as a symbol of acceptance, love, and happiness. "Today, we honor the courage and determination of our children with Down syndrome. From now on, these stairs will serve as the new Down Syndrome Photo Stop, which we will continue to enhance for more visitors," she said.

Mayor Gómez reiterated her commitment to inclusivity and respect for everyone's rights, advocating for a more equitable municipality. During the event, children left handprints on the stairs, a poignant message of solidarity and inclusion.

Following the ceremony, attendees proceeded to Turtle Park for a gathering promoting the well-being of individuals with Down syndrome. Mayor Gómez expressed her gratitude to the “El Corazón de Wilito” Foundation, a group comprised of 15 families with Down syndrome members and around 70 volunteers. The foundation is a key community pillar, organizing various activities to benefit those in need.

Among the attendees were Alicia Ricalde Magaña, Honorary President of the Comprehensive Family Development System (DIF) Isla Mujeres; Yuseli Juliana López Tec, President of the “El Corazón de Wilito” Foundation; Tharin Vidal Cacique, Director of the Community Hospital of Isla Mujeres; and Fabiola Vicencio Jiménez, General Director of the Municipal DIF.
