The Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) has approved the construction of a new power substation in the Riviera Maya. The project, known as the SE Kantenah BCO Associated Works, is set to be built near Puerto Aventuras. The federal government plans to invest over 200 million pesos in the project, which is part of a larger effort to strengthen the electrical system in the region.

This new substation is one of three projects aimed at improving infrastructure and preventing power outages in the area. It will also ensure a reliable power supply for the Maya Train, a major transportation project in the region. SEMARNAT has given the project an 18-month construction timeline, beginning in February.

The project is being spearheaded by a state-owned company, which has been authorized to operate for 40 years. The total investment from the Federal Government will be 206 million 167 thousand 128 pesos. The project includes three main components: the electric substation, an access road, and two transmission lines, according to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The location for these works, in addition to the previously approved project, is near Puerto Aventuras, about 35 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen. The plan includes two substations, roads, and a 42-kilometer high-tension power line running from the border of Benito Juarez municipality to Puerto Morelos.

The projects have been approved with environmental impact resolutions due to plans to remove medium forest vegetation and the impact on the local soil. Two more similar projects are currently under review by SEMARNAT.
