A new business venture, Soriana Híper Supermarket, worth 550 million pesos was launched in Tulum
On Friday, Tulum welcomed a new Soriana Híper supermarket, located on Cobá road. The grand opening was officiated by Tulum’s Mayor, Diego Castañón Trejo, and the founder of the Soriana Group, Ricardo Martín Bringas.
Following the formal inauguration, they toured of the state-of-the-art facilities, an investment which symbolizes a significant step in the area’s commercial growth.
Sergio Ortega, Soriana’s Openings Director, shared that the new store represented an investment of over 550 million pesos and created 550 direct and indirect jobs. “This project was a significant undertaking for all the construction teams involved, who managed to complete the store in an average of six months. As you can see today, it is fully operational,” Ortega stated.
The History of Soriana
Soriana, founded in 1968 by brothers Francisco and Armando Martín Borque in Torreón, Coahuila, has grown into one of Mexico’s leading retail chains. The company expanded its presence across the country, including Cancun, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya region.
The foundation stone for the new store was laid in March during its initial announcement, with the official construction period lasting just six months. The introduction of Soriana Híper in Tulum signifies a boost to the local economy and a marked improvement in the commercial infrastructure.
This development reflects Soriana’s commitment to serving both residents and tourists in the Riviera Maya, contributing to the area’s economic growth and providing diverse shopping alternatives.
Rapid Growth and Tourism Impact
Tulum has experienced significant growth, with the municipality’s population increasing by 65.3% between 2010 and 2020. This expansion is largely due to tourism, which brings millions of visitors annually, impacting local infrastructure and services.
The population figures for Tulum vary depending on the source and whether they refer to the town or the entire municipality. The most reliable data comes from the 2020 census, which reported 33,374 residents in the town and 46,721 in the municipality. Given the rapid growth, the current population is likely higher, but precise numbers are unavailable.
Projects such as the new Soriana Híper collectively aim to enhance Tulum’s infrastructure, support its expanding population, and solidify its status as a key player in the region’s tourism industry.
The opening of the new Soriana supermarket in Tulum aligns with these broader development efforts, providing residents and visitors with improved retail options and contributing to the area’s economic vitality.
