A new trust is expected to be operational from June, a process that involves acquiring equipment and staff, and assessing the state of treatment plants. Despite the complexity of the task, there is political will to get started, according to Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Association of Hotels of Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres. This comes after the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur) stepped down from managing the maintenance and cleaning of Cancun's hotel zone in February, passing the responsibility to the state government's newly formed State Fund for Tourism Promotion.
At the next meeting with Governor Mara Lezama, the groundwork will be laid for the new trust to take over, including the management of the Kukulcán Boulevard paving project. The Government of Quintana Roo has already presented a promising proposal, but the next step is to establish the trust and determine its members from the private sector and the state and municipal governments.
The president of the Hotel Council of the Mexican Caribbean also announced that the trust will start with a budget of approximately one billion pesos. The allocation of resources will be reassessed annually based on the trust's needs.
Eduardo Martínez González, president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) of the Caribbean, assured that the necessary resources for the full operation of the Hotel Zone have been secured for this year. Many former Fonatur employees, who have extensive operational knowledge, have been rehired to ensure the maintenance schedule is maintained. However, the search for additional federal funding continues. Among the proposals is the Right of the Visitor, which would allocate a percentage of its revenue to the trust. Despite the transition, Fonatur still has several outstanding issues, including the modernization of wastewater treatment plants, which will be funded partly by the federation and partly by the Environmental Sanitation Rights.
