Feminist Groups Push for Violence-Free Lives in Quintana Roo

From May until now, a civil judge has referred approximately 20 men from Benito Juarez to the Center for Rehabilitation of Violent Behaviors towards Women (Cecovim). Mariana Sanchez Tapia, the center's coordinator, noted that this city has a higher referral rate than others due to its larger population. Currently, around 300 men are enrolled in the Cecovim program. However, not all participants are there due to violent behavior. Some attend voluntarily, seeking to better understand their emotions and resolve conflicts.

Sanchez Tapia explained that some of the participants are public servants. They are trained to recognize signs of violent behavior within their programs and address it from a gender perspective. Police officers are also among the program's participants. In Othón P. Blanco, two groups of 40 academy graduates have been trained, while in Isla Mujeres, a group of 20 officers have undergone the program.

The aim of training male public servants is to help them identify emotions and apply this knowledge in their daily work, stressed Sanchez Tapia. The reeducation process consists of 10 sessions, each lasting two and a half hours and held once a week. This totals 40 hours of training. The workshops are facilitated by psychologists specializing in gender issues and the concept of new masculinities.
