Public health and pediatric specialist, David Canché Durán, has dismissed rumors circulating on social media about a supposed public health emergency due to Metapneumovirus in Yucatán. He clarified that while this virus, first identified in 2001 in the Netherlands, is a common cause of respiratory infections in children under five and older adults, it does not pose a public health emergency. The virus is particularly common among those with pre-existing conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, HIV, or those who have had Covid-19.
According to Canché Durán, "Metapneumovirus is not a public health emergency and does not have pandemic potential. However, it can cause seasonal epidemic outbreaks, which is likely what is happening in Yucatán now." He noted that in the United States, this virus accounts for 10-15% of seasonal respiratory infections and 10% of severe pneumonia cases.
In Yucatán, at least one positive case of Metapneumovirus has been detected in a 28-year-old male. Canché Durán emphasized that influenza type A and B, along with other respiratory viruses, remain the main causes of respiratory diseases.
Symptoms of Metapneumovirus include high fever, headache, fatigue, persistent cough, and in severe cases, lung complications such as fibrosis or worsening of COPD. "The cough is characteristic: it starts mild, seems to disappear, but returns with more intensity on the fourth or fifth day, possibly extending up to two or three months," explained Canché Durán.
Canché Durán stressed the importance of avoiding speculation and adhering to proper prevention measures. These include wearing face masks, frequent hand washing, avoiding sudden temperature changes, and avoiding crowded places, especially for vulnerable individuals. He also warned against self-medication or overusing antibiotics or antihistamines, as these can exacerbate symptoms or lead to bacterial resistance.
Canché Durán concluded, "Since its discovery in 2001, Metapneumovirus has caused outbreaks, but it has never reached pandemic levels. The most important thing is not to engage in speculation and to maintain proper prevention measures. In case of doubt or presence of severe symptoms, it is necessary to consult with a health professional rather than relying on unverified information on social media."
