A significant earthquake was experienced in several areas along the Quintana Roo coastline on Saturday afternoon. The epicenter of the earthquake, which measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, was located 209 kilometers southwest of the Cayman Islands, in the central region of the Caribbean Sea.

Despite the unusual seismic activity, state authorities have ruled out a tsunami warning. However, they have warned of possible strong currents near the entrances to the ports of the Mexican Caribbean.

The earthquake was felt in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Chetumal, with reports coming in around 18:20 hrs on Saturday. Earthquakes are relatively rare in this part of the country, leading to surprise among both residents and authorities. As of now, no damage has been reported.

Cancún International Airport, the main gateway for tourists visiting the northern parts of Quintana Roo, also experienced the earthquake, albeit lightly. The airport authorities have confirmed there was no damage or flight cancellations as a result of the earthquake.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has urged residents to stay updated with official announcements from the Port Captaincy and the Secretary of the Navy as a precautionary measure.

In Cancún, where the earthquake was felt most strongly, Mayor Ana Patricia Peralta has initiated tours to address any potential issues. Prior to official confirmation of the earthquake, there was speculation on social media attributing the tremors to explosions from the sascaberas, who frequently use explosives to extract stone material in the region.
