Cancun Charity Concert: Ola Onabule Explores Afro-Latin Fusion

In a recent interview, Ola Onabule expressed his excitement about his return to Mexico and his interest in exploring the fusion of Afro-Latin rhythms in his upcoming performance.

Onabule is thrilled to be back in Mexico for this concert. He sees this event as an excellent opportunity to collaborate with the talented Cancún Big Band, exploring a repertoire that blends Afro and Latin music. As he has African roots and the Big Band consists of gifted Latin musicians, Onabule believes this is a perfect chance to explore the connections between their cultures. He has extensively worked with African rhythms and noticed their similarities with Latin music, which has deepened his understanding of these cultural connections.

Onabule's Nigerian origin certainly influences his music. He points out that many African rhythms, such as Shakere or Conga, originate from his roots. These rhythms are also recognized in Cuban and Brazilian cultures, creating a unique bridge between their musical traditions and offering a special way to present music in Mexico.

When asked about his previous visit to Mexico in 2014 and whether he noticed any evolution in Mexican music, Onabule explained that it's complex to pinpoint a specific evolution as each place has its unique identity. He finds that San Luis Potosí, Cancún, and Mexico City each have their distinct vibe. Onabule also emphasizes that music has a strong social component.

In his work, Onabule uses music to express his social concerns and human interactions. His lyrics reflect his feelings during significant moments in his life, whether with family or friends. He strives for honesty in his art, which includes addressing issues that are deeply important to him.

Onabule's creative process involves constantly gathering ideas and listening to stories from those around him. These experiences provide an endless source of inspiration. He uses his phone to capture fragments of melodies or lyrics that arise in daily life. Then, in his recording studio, he develops these ideas until he finds a deep narrative that connects them.

Despite not having a significant presence on social media, Onabule has loyal followers who have supported his music for years. His focus has always been the live connection with the audience. He acknowledges the importance of digital platforms but maintains that his heart is in live performances.

Onabule hopes that the Cancun audience will be ready to enjoy and dance at his concert. He encourages everyone to get involved, show their dance moves, and have fun.

Before going on stage, Onabule ensures he is physically prepared. He drinks plenty of water and does vocal exercises to stay fit, as he enjoys moving a lot during performances.

When asked how he would like to be remembered, Onabule said, "Always trying to do things right." That's the essence of who he is. Don't miss his concert this Friday 21st.
