The closure of public restrooms at a Blue Flag designated beach in Puerto Morelos has sparked frustration among both locals and visitors. The inconvenience has been caused by the ongoing renovation of a pathway leading to the beach. The slow progress of the work, which has already been underway for over three months, is particularly concerning given the approaching high winter season.
A recent survey of the beaches of Puerto Morelos, stretching from the iconic leaning lighthouse to the hotel zone, revealed that the renovation works remain incomplete at at least three entrance points.
One such entrance, located on Ejército Mexicano street, is currently closed due to the presence of construction machinery. Pedestrian access is currently limited to a narrow corridor on the side of the street. The public bathrooms, a key feature of the beach's Blue Flag status, are located in this area but have been closed for the past three months. The closure followed the cutting off of water and electricity supplies to facilitate the refurbishment work.
Tourism service providers have noted that this has caused significant inconvenience for beachgoers seeking to use the restrooms. A sign posted at the site reads: "Restrooms out of service due to public works, sorry for the inconvenience."
Just last week, the entrance on Ejército Mexicano street was cluttered with debris, which was only recently cleared. Recent rainfall has also resulted in the washing away of fill from the site, further complicating the situation.
At another beach access point on Plutarco Elías Calles street, renovation work is ongoing, but there is still room for beachgoers to move around. In contrast, the entrance on Leona Vicario street is completely closed off due to the refurbishment of the wooden walkway.
A large construction site for a luxury condo building is located at another beach access on Lázaro Cárdenas street, which also brings a constant stream of workers to the area.
These issues have made beach access in Puerto Morelos problematic for visitors, a situation that is particularly acute on weekends when visitor numbers are highest.
