“Massive Sargassum Cleanup Success on Isla Mujeres Coast!”

A team of 70 people successfully cleared over 30 tons of brown algae from the coast of Isla Mujeres before midday.

The first large influx of sargassum on Isla Mujeres was reported yesterday, driven to the shore by strong Southeastern winds. The brown algae primarily affected the Eastern side of Playa Norte.

In response, the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) activated a Temporary Employment Program. This initiative enlisted local fishermen to assist with the immediate removal of the macroalgae, ensuring the area was restored to its original condition by noon.

The clean-up operation involved a total of 70 people, including staff from various municipal departments. The team worked between the mouths of Zazil-ha and Carlos Lazo streets, removing approximately 30 tons of sargassum.

By midday, the area was completely cleared. The waste was then transported in trucks to the Solid Waste Transfer Station.
