The Department of Ecology in Benito Juarez, Cancún, is ensuring the safety of over 456,000 turtle eggs. They have also successfully released 6,750 hatchlings into 48 designated protection areas.
Tania Fernández, the Director of Ecology in Benito Juarez, announced that they have been protecting 36,000 eggs since July. This action was taken to prevent any potential damage from Hurricane Beryl. It is anticipated that these safeguarded eggs will begin hatching in the upcoming days.
The turtle nesting season typically concludes in October. Following this, the release of the newborn turtles is expected to occur between November and December.
The most common turtle species found on the beaches of Cancún are the white turtle, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtles. As of now, there have been no sightings or records of leatherback turtles.
