The Quintana Roo Government, in partnership with the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) and the Secretariat of Navy (SEMAR), is addressing the issue of sargassum on the state's coasts. They have been installing sargassum barriers, with a total of 5,740 meters already in place out of a planned 9,200 meters. The goal of these barriers is to ensure the cleanliness and preservation of the beaches by collecting macroalgae in both oceanic and shallow waters.

In addition to the barriers, SEMAR is utilizing 22 smaller support vessels along with the oceanic sargassum ship ARM “Natans”. Through these efforts, they have managed to collect 524 tons of sargassum from the state's coasts. This initiative is aimed at creating the necessary conditions for the protection, recovery, and conservation of the marine and coastal environment.

SEMA's head, Huguette Hernández Gómez, recently met with Admiral C.G. DEM. Abraham Eloy Caballero Rosas, Commander of the Ninth Naval Region. They introduced the new head of Strategy, Navy Captain C.G. DEM Mario Alberto Barrera Navarro, who will serve as the Administrative Sub-inspector of the Ninth Naval Region. He replaces Rear Admiral C.G. DEM Francisco Figuereo Corona. Also present at the meeting was Navy Captain Francisco Acona Lizama, Chief of the Operations Section of the Ninth Naval Region.
