Over 60 beehives in the community of San Antonio Tuk have perished following a fumigation event on habanero pepper crops. The incident, which resulted in the mass death of these crucial pollinators, was caused by the agrochemicals used during the fumigation process. This has had a direct impact on local beekeepers.
Local beekeepers have been advised to collect evidence of the damage for formal reporting to the relevant authorities. While this incident is fortunately a standalone case, there is a need to remain vigilant to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The beekeeping industry has faced numerous challenges recently. One of the main issues has been a prolonged drought, which has negatively affected both the beehives and agricultural production. Additionally, heavy rainfall causing flooding has also damaged cornfields, creating a harsh environment for beekeeping and other farming activities.
Despite the drought and pests like the fall armyworm affecting the initial corn plantings, the introduction of bio-inputs and the establishment of a bio-factory have helped mitigate these issues. This has led to a partial stabilization of corn production.
The corn harvest has shown signs of improvement due to recent rainfall, aiding in the gradual recovery of cornfields. However, the situation in San Antonio Tuk has had a severe impact on the beekeeping project. This has affected not just the beekeepers, but the entire community.
