A recent study has unveiled the presence of more than nine drug cartels currently operating in the Yucatan. The research, conducted by AC Consultores, utilized data from the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and media reports to identify the active cartels.
The researchers used Sedena reports, obtained by the hacker group Guacamaya Leaks in 2022, and cross-referenced them with related journalistic articles. The study identified the following cartels as currently active in the region:
- CJNG.
- CDS.
- Gulf Cartel.
- Knights Templar.
- Los Zetas.
- The Independent Cartel of Acapulco (CIDA).
- The Isthmus Cartel.
- The Epitacio Family.
- Independent Organizations.
The study highlights that the Yucatan is primarily used as a transit route to reach Quintana Roo, a region frequently contested by criminal groups. AC Consultores also noted that both the Isthmus Cartel and the Epitacio family originated from Oaxaca and Chiapas. The latter group established its presence in the Yucatan in the late 90s.
