In 2024, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Quintana Roo significantly improved the quality of life for many individuals by successfully performing 1,030 cataract surgeries. These operations had a profound positive impact on the patients and their families throughout the state.

Throughout the year, the IMSS conducted 23 cataract surgery campaigns. These campaigns enabled 1,030 patients to regain their sight, and by extension, their ability to perform daily activities with increased independence. The breakdown of surgeries performed per hospital is as follows:

  • General Hospital Zone number 1 in Chetumal: 87 surgeries
  • General Hospital Zone number 18 in Playa del Carmen: 283 surgeries
  • General Hospital Zone number 2 in Cozumel: 54 surgeries
  • General Hospital Zone number 3 in Cancún: 186 surgeries
  • Regional General Hospital number 17 in Cancún: 420 surgeries

Dr. Corral Villanueva highlighted the significance of these operations, particularly for the elderly, who are most affected by cataracts. She noted that regaining sight enables older individuals to maintain a higher level of independence, which in turn, eases the care-giving responsibilities of their relatives. Dr. Villanueva concluded by urging the public to prioritize preventative measures and eye health care.
