Papantla Flyers Seek Park Relocation for Uninterrupted Performances

The Papantla Flyers, a group of performers who have entertained visitors and residents of Playa del Carmen's Fundadores Park for many years, are once again asking municipal authorities to relocate them within the park. This request is due to a number of inconveniences they have had to endure in their current location.

The Flyers' performances are often disrupted by sunbathers who use the park's walkways as an open-air bar to consume alcoholic beverages. Additionally, the group's location within the park is often in the way of emergency events and interventions by Municipal Citizen Security and Civil Protection authorities.

Isaac González, a representative of the Flyers, explains that their current location, where they were moved after the park was remodeled, has caused numerous issues. The presence of sunbathers using the space as a bar and the area's proximity to municipal authorities have hindered their performances. The Flyers' pole often obstructs official vehicles during rescue operations, causing the group to suspend their activities.

González notes that this issue is not new. The Flyers have raised this concern with previous administrations, but their requests were only acknowledged, not acted upon. "We want to relocate the pole of the Flyers because lately we have been affected by a problem there, with the people who come to the park and spend their time drinking," González said. "When we do our dance we are affected because where we descend there is a bar where people sit and we can no longer work comfortably."

The group used to be located near the park's kiosk, but were moved during the administration of Laura Beristain Navarrete. "When there's an incident, like a drowning, and the patrol cars, ambulances have to enter, well we can't work anymore," González added.

There are a total of 20 dancers who work in various shifts at this location. González states that the same number of families are affected by this issue, as they can't earn enough income to meet their needs due to the disruptions to their performances.
