The Pasto Cinema cultural project is set to launch in the gardens of the Enrique Barocio Library in Cancún in the coming months. The project will provide an outdoor space for film screenings. Carlos del Castillo Álvarez, director of Cancún District, announced that the first batch of materials was received last week. A planning tour of the site was also conducted, with representatives from the Secretary of Public Works, the Municipal Secretary of Welfare, the General Services Directorate, and other supporters of the Barocio Library project.
Del Castillo Álvarez shared plans to utilize the library's expansive gardens for the project. The aim is to develop both the interior and exterior spaces of the library. The project seeks to transform the library into a cultural hub, with film screenings as the main attraction.
The project will incorporate the structure of a pedestrian bridge that was removed from Tulum avenue a few months back. The architect leading the project explained that this structure will be repurposed and integrated into the library gardens, creating a unique and sustainable environment. This innovative approach to reuse and urban recycling is a key objective of the Pasto Cinema team.
A distinctive feature of Pasto Cinema will be its view of the Jacinto Canek sports unit. This will facilitate library activities during the afternoon and evening, two to three times a week. The program will include screenings of art films, children's films, and documentaries. Del Castillo Álvarez expressed hopes that this initiative will attract the young people who frequent the area.
Del Castillo Álvarez also highlighted the recent improvements to the Barocio Library, funded by a budget approved by the previous administration. These include renovated inclusive bathrooms, upgraded electrical installations, new perimeter fences, fresh paint, and improved lighting. Additionally, with the support of the Original Foundation, a new children's play area was built and air conditioning was installed. These enhancements have positioned the library as a model for the municipality and the state.
While the project's completion will extend beyond 2024 due to the workload of the General Services Directorate staff, it is anticipated that Pasto Cinema's programming will commence in early 2024. The project is poised to become a cultural landmark in Cancún, fostering creativity and cultural access in an inclusive and environmentally-friendly space.
