Materials salvaged from the pedestrian bridge on Tulum Avenue, located opposite the bus terminal, are set to be repurposed for a new project. The initiative, dubbed "Pasto Cinema", will be installed at the Barocio Library, according to Carlos Del Castillo Álvarez, Director of Cancun District.
The leftover bridge materials will be used to create a covered, shaded area in the library's gardens. This space will be used for showing educational and art films, and will also provide a venue for a film program at the library, explained Del Castillo Álvarez.
The project will be funded through private investment, with various companies contributing approximately 200 thousand pesos. The initiative is part of a wider effort to encourage citizens and businesses to take ownership of local areas. Del Castillo Álvarez clarified that the funding is not from the municipality, but from a group known as “Friends of the Library”.
The completion date for the library areas is yet to be determined, as negotiations for donations for each of the spaces are still ongoing.
The goal of the project is to create structures that will draw the attention of students, young people, and athletes who frequent the area. The hope is that this will encourage them to visit the library and engage in cultural activities.
The "Pasto Cinema" will have the capacity to seat around 40 people. It will also feature a covered area to provide shelter in case of rain, and could potentially be used for other activities beyond film screenings in the future.
This initiative is an example of how repurposing materials can lead to community improvements, providing valuable resources and entertainment options. It also fosters a sense of communal engagement and creativity.
