The Southeast Airport Group (ASUR), which operates the Cancun and Cozumel international airports, has unveiled a series of ambitious expansion projects designed to enhance capacity, operational efficiency, and traveler experience. These projects reflect the region’s growing importance as a global tourism hub and aim to meet the increasing demands of domestic and international travel.
Expanding Cancun International Airport: Terminal 4 and Beyond
Cancun International Airport, the second-busiest in Mexico and a major gateway to the Riviera Maya, is set to undergo significant upgrades. ASUR has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) for approval to expand Terminal 4 and construct a new corporate building. The estimated cost of these combined projects is $6.2 million, marking a substantial investment in the airport’s future.
The expansion of Terminal 4 includes plans to extend runways 12R and 12L eastward toward Huayacán Avenue. These changes are designed to alleviate congestion on the taxiways connecting Terminals 2 and 3, improving the flow of aircraft and overall operational efficiency. The project also includes the establishment of an energy operations and training center, which will strengthen the airport’s strategic infrastructure and ensure it remains a leader in the region.

The proposal, currently under review via an Environmental Impact Statement, outlines the use of land located at kilometer 22 of the Federal Highway 307 Chetumal–Puerto Juárez. Construction is expected to take approximately two years once approved. These upgrades are part of a broader effort to streamline operations at Cancun Airport, which handled more than 31 million passengers in 2023 and over 25,000 flights annually.
While discussions about the potential construction of a 5th Terminal have arisen in the past, the immediate focus remains on optimizing Terminal 4 and its surrounding infrastructure to address current capacity needs.
Enhancements at Cozumel International Airport
ASUR is also prioritizing upgrades at Cozumel International Airport, a critical hub for the island’s tourism-driven economy. The group has proposed the construction of a commercial platform capable of accommodating two Category C aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737. This project, estimated to cost $2 million, aims to attract more commercial flights and improve the airport’s overall infrastructure.
These upgrades come at a pivotal time for Cozumel, which processed approximately 600,000 passengers and handled over 7,000 flights in 2023. Known for its proximity to the Mesoamerican Reef and status as a world-class diving destination, Cozumel relies heavily on reliable and modernized air connectivity. The proposed platform will strengthen the airport’s capacity to serve both tourists and local residents, supporting the island’s growing appeal as a premier travel destination.

A History of Expansion and Growth
The expansions at Cancun and Cozumel airports reflect the continued evolution of these facilities since their inception. The Cancun International Airport, inaugurated in 1975, began as a modest facility catering to the first waves of tourists drawn to the Riviera Maya. Over the decades, the airport has undergone several major expansions, including the addition of Terminals 2, 3, and 4. These upgrades have transformed it into a world-class airport capable of connecting travelers to destinations across the Americas, Europe, and beyond.
The Cozumel International Airport, established in the 1960s, initially focused on regional travel. Over time, its strategic location and the island’s allure as a diving hotspot attracted international flights, prompting modernization efforts in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, the airport serves as a key gateway for eco-tourists and cruise passengers alike.
The Strategic Importance of These Projects
The planned expansions at Cancun and Cozumel airports are integral to ASUR’s strategy to solidify Quintana Roo’s position as a global tourism leader. By enhancing capacity, streamlining operations, and improving infrastructure, these projects will support the region’s economic growth while ensuring a seamless experience for millions of travelers.
Cancun Airport’s upgrades, particularly the expansion of Terminal 4 and runway improvements, are expected to reduce congestion, enhance operational efficiency, and support sustainable growth. Meanwhile, Cozumel Airport’s new commercial platform will attract larger aircraft, boosting connectivity and positioning the island as an even more attractive destination.
A Vision for the Future
These initiatives underscore the vital role of Cancun and Cozumel airports in supporting Quintana Roo’s thriving tourism industry. With investments totaling millions of dollars, ASUR is laying the groundwork for long-term growth and ensuring that these airports remain at the forefront of aviation in Mexico.
As the Riviera Maya continues to attract visitors from around the world, the expansions at these airports will play a crucial role in maintaining the region’s reputation for world-class travel experiences. For both tourists and residents, these developments signal a commitment to progress and a brighter future for air travel in the region.
