On November 20, 2024, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, came alive as over 8,500 residents gathered to commemorate the 114th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. The event, graced by Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, featured a vibrant civic and sports parade that showcased the community’s unity and spirit.
The procession included 64 groups comprising students from all educational levels, athletes, seniors, members of various unions such as taxi drivers, tricycle operators, and municipal workers, as well as municipal officials, horse riders, and traditional escaramuzas. Starting at the intersection of 34th Avenue and 10th Street, the parade moved along 30th Avenue, turned onto Constituyentes Avenue, and proceeded down 20th Street, culminating at the Plaza 28 de Julio. There, authorities and hundreds of spectators warmly greeted and applauded each group’s performances.

Despite a heavy downpour that began an hour into the event, the parade maintained its lively atmosphere, filled with colorful displays and Mexican music, with participants dressed as adelitas and revolutionaries, emblematic of the commemoration. Demonstrating solidarity with the participants who braved the weather, President Mercado and accompanying officials observed the event under the persistent rain.
In her address, President Mercado highlighted the Mexican Revolution as a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, marking a significant shift and serving as a cornerstone in the pursuit of social justice and the well-being of the people. She emphasized that the revolution not only dismantled an authoritarian regime but also laid the groundwork for a more equitable Mexico, establishing social rights such as public education, land distribution, and labor laws as fundamental aspects of national identity.
Reflecting on the ongoing Fourth Transformation in Mexico, President Mercado noted that the revolutionary legacy endures, with the movement’s central aim being to place the people at the heart of all decisions. She stated, “It is the continuation of that historic struggle for justice, equality, and well-being; an effort to eradicate corruption, impunity, and inequality that still afflict our nation. The fundamental principle of our movement is perfectly summarized: With the people, everything; without the people, nothing.”

President Mercado also recognized the parade as more than a celebration, viewing it as a testament to the commitment of children, youth, workers, and public servants to the values that fueled the revolution: respect, discipline, and dedication.
Among the attendees was Ronaldo Rodríguez, known as “Lazy Boy,” a Mexican mixed martial artist competing in the UFC, who joined the community in honoring this significant national milestone.
