Victim Alleges Abuse of Authority by Playa del Carmen Police
Another troubling case of alleged abuse of authority has emerged involving the Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat, led by Raúl Tassinari González. A Playa del Carmen resident has accused police officers of making an unjustified arrest and stealing cash during the incident.
The victim recounts that the event occurred this past Thursday in Playa del Carmen. According to his statement, he was detained without cause under the pretext of looking “suspicious.” During the arrest, the victim claims an officer took cash from his wallet.
“He told me I looked suspicious. When I got out, he took my wallet. I had 9,000 pesos in cash. He arrested me supposedly for being drunk, which was not the case. He told me if I resisted, he was going to beat me up. I didn’t resist,” the victim said.
Upon arrival at the station, the situation escalated. The victim alleges that the officer took all his belongings, demanded his phone be unlocked, and opened his wallet, taking most of the cash. “He left me with only 1,200 pesos,” the victim explained. When he protested, the officer reportedly laughed and forced him to sign a document relinquishing his belongings. The victim said he was threatened with a “warning” if he refused.
The officer involved was identified as Antoni D.C., driving patrol car 84031. The victim accuses the officer of using his uniform to intimidate and believes this behavior reflects an abuse of power. “They intended to keep my belongings without any consequences,” he said.
The victim is now calling on Municipal President Estefanía Mercado to address the situation and take action to prevent further incidents of police misconduct. The case has sparked growing concerns about accountability within the Municipal Citizen Security Secretary and calls for stronger oversight of law enforcement in Playa del Carmen.
