Carlos Contreras Mejorada, the Secretary of Health in Solidaridad, has dismissed rumors of high hospital occupancy in Playa del Carmen due to a surge in COVID-19 cases. These rumors, which circulated on social media, claimed that the General Hospital was dealing with an alarming number of COVID-19 patients.

Contreras Mejorada clarified that there has not been a significant increase in cases in Quintana Roo. He pointed out that the current number of cases is actually lower than the count from the same month last year. "As of June 6th, we're seeing 60 percent fewer cases compared to last year. This means that we had more cases last year than what we're currently reporting," he explained.

He reminded the public that COVID-19 "is here to stay", and did not dismiss the possibility of a resurgence in other parts of the country. Although there have been cases in recent weeks, he emphasized that these patients have exhibited "mild symptoms".

Contreras Mejorada also refuted claims of overcrowding at IMSS Hospital due to COVID-19 cases. "It's untrue that the General Hospital is full. We have no reports of the IMSS hospital reaching capacity due to this issue. That's simply not true," he stated.

He noted that Primary Care Centers in the area have seen more suspected cases of COVID-19 than confirmed ones in recent weeks. "Yes, we have had positive cases. We've been seeing about three or four positive cases per week," he concluded.
