Solidaridad No More: Playa del Carmen Takes the Crown

A vibrant and colorful large sign reading 'Playa del Carmen' in block letters, with palm trees and a clear blue sky in the background.

Starting today, the municipality previously known as Solidaridad will officially be renamed Playa del Carmen. This change comes after a proposal was approved by the XVII Legislature of the Congress of the State of Quintana Roo. The decree, number 111, was published in the Official Gazette of the State of Quintana Roo at midday on Thursday. It amends several articles of the Political Constitution of the Free and Sovereign State of Quintana Roo.

With the publication of this decree, the municipality's name officially changes from Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen. The change takes effect immediately, as of Thursday, March 20, despite the cover date of the decree being March 19.

The mayoralty of Puerto Aventuras will continue to be a part of this municipality, retaining its current powers and functions. This will remain the case until the necessary reforms are made in the state and municipal laws and regulations.

Any legal provisions that previously referred to the municipality of Solidaridad, its town council, its municipal authorities, or the mayoralty of Puerto Aventuras in the municipality of Solidaridad, will now refer to the municipality of Playa del Carmen. These legal provisions will continue to apply, as will the competent authorities referred to. All the legal provisions, rights, and obligations of the municipality and its mayoralty will remain in force without the need for rectification or additional procedure.

The current administration, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, proposed the name change. Mayor Mercado assured that this change will not require citizens to renew or pay for new official documentation. The process will not affect identifications or legal transactions. As was the case when Playa del Carmen separated from Cozumel, it will not be necessary to replace documents. All documentation will remain valid until it gradually expires and is renewed.

After the municipality's name change was officially announced and published in the Official Gazette of the State, the official social media accounts of the municipality updated their names to "Municipality of Playa del Carmen”.
